Steroid tablets

These are not the same as the steroids that some bodybuilders use, which are called anabolic steroids. Because anabolic steroids can make you feel paranoid, aggressive and violent for no reason, it’s not that unusual for anabolic steroid users to lash out or attack family and friends. Corticosteroids have their own side effects, including difficulty sleeping, mood changes, and weight gain. They will only be prescribed by your doctor when it’s deemed safe and necessary.

• Some of the more common side effects of long-term steroid administration are listed in Table 2.
• The most common side effects include a metallic taste, indigestion, difficulty sleeping, mood swings or altered mood and flushing of the face.

However, it can occasionally happen if they’re used at high doses and for a long time. An immunosuppressant which works by reducing the function of
lymphocytes (a type of white cell). In the long term it can cause
chronic damage to the kidneys and this should be carefully monitored.

• But sometimes they can cause unpleasant side effects, such as an increased appetite, mood changes and difficulty sleeping (insomnia).

Regular users may find that they start having trouble sleeping. They may get paranoid, or may experience dramatic mood swings; and even violence can occur alongside strong feelings of aggression. There can also be psychological effects, including mood swings, paranoia, and aggressive or manic behaviour.

Study paves way for steroid treatments with fewer side effects

If appropriate, patients may be prescribed
bisphosphonates, calcium or vitamin D to protect their bones. Patients
may also be prescribed tablets to protect the stomach from side effects
(eg. Ranitidine, Lansoprazole, Omeprazole or similar). Steroids have a potent anti-inflammatory effect and are often used to reduce inflammation. This means your body has problems making enough of a hormone called cortisol. Having this problem can affect your body’s ability to cope with stress. This might be from an infection, surgery or injury for example.

Side effects while treatment is being given

These are more likely if you’re on a high dose or if you’re taking steroids for a long time. Depending on which condition you have and what dose you’re prescribed, you may notice an improvement in your symptoms within a few days.

A number of
the drugs are general to many of the vasculitides whilst others are
specific to individual vasculitic diseases. If you need specific medical advice about your condition, your GP or IBD team will be best placed to help. Steroids are one of the most effective drugs to treat immune-mediated and inflammatory diseases. However, there are some side effects that your vet will try to minimise.

Tell your doctor straightaway if you think you could have chicken pox or shingles. Let a member of your medical team know straightaway if you notice any signs of infection. Early action can help stop problems from developing into more serious difficulties.
